May 2010

BlackJaQ have just returned from convention with another gold medal! And we hit the 600!! First quartet in Region #34 history to break the 600 mark, so we are rapt!  Our wonderful Perth Harmony Chorus, of which our lead Carole Macintyre is the director, also took off a gold medal! And on top of that (what a week for Carole!) as Perth scored over 600 and Carole has completed her DCP, she has also earned the status of Master Director! Congratulations!!

PHC are now working hard to prepare for a show in September with the wonderful Australian Army Band and the fantastic Idea of North! plus a little trip to Houston, Texas next year. It was fabulous to catch up with so many of our Sweet Adeline mates from around Australia, but convention is never long enough to get to spend any time together.... maybe we should build in a purely social day at the end of convention so we get to really spend some time together!

Congratulations to i’Cappella , our sisters in harmony in WA taking off second place at this year’s quartet comp and to their chorus A’Cappella West for taking the 4th place in the chorus competition. Well done ladies!  It’s great to have another large chorus in Perth and we look forward to your future endeavours and achievements.

March 2010

BlackJaQ are so looking forward to our next Regional gathering in Mandurah, Western Australia (in 70 more sleeps!!) As our wonderful coach , Mo Field, lives in Sweden, we have been working with her via Skype for the past couple of months. This week we were lucky enough to have her and Viveka both here for coaching sessions with our fabulous Perth Harmony Chorus and  BJ managed to squeeze an hour in with her as well. She is an incredible musician and a great interpreter of expression. We are so blessed to have been in San Antonio at the I.E.S. when Stockholm City Voices received a standing ovation, their gold medal and Mo’s Master Director status....they blew us away and now she is part of our musical lives.... Thanks Mo !!

BlackJAQ would like to offer their very best wishes to all competing quartets who will be visiting our home state and competing in Mandurah on May 14. We can’t wait to catch up and share the day with you! Break a Lip!!!!

November 2009

BlackJaQ were thrilled to receive an invitation from Sweet Adelines International to ‘perform and assist faculty with class demonstrations’ at the I.E.S. Pacific Rim, in Auckland New Zealand.  Unfortunately, this I.E.S. has been postponed to 2011, but BJ were still thrilled to have received the invitation.

 Thank You!!!

December 2009

Wow! Where did the time go?

We had the most fulfilling journey in Nashville. We experienced the way our larger organisation and its members work to embrace and encourage all international quartet competitors. We were able to meet and chat with the singers we had met 'online' prior to competition. It's even more lovely to chat in person.

Currently we are learning new repertoire, singing Christmas carols and planning rehearsals for the coming year.

October 2009

OK!! we have made it. We now have all the funding needed to get to the Nashville convention. BlackJaq would like to thank every SAI member in Australia, our friends and families and everyone else who has supported our funding ventures. We are so humbled and honoured by your support. You will be with us all the way and we are counting on the good vibes being sent to us to give our best performance.

Love you

September 2009

We have just completed Perth Harmony's show Barbershop Blitz - Bling It On! What fun we have had presenting a wide variety of musical styles including our own competition package. We shared the stage with PHC and Spontaneous, as well as Nexus and 3 Men & a Tenor. What wonderful performances they staged in their run up to National competition in Hobart. Good luck boys!

It is 3 weeks and 3 days until we fly to Nashville (but who's counting Kali?). We are so excited and blown away by the support we have received from our fellow Sweet Adelines across the country. We plan to stage our best performance yet and soak up as much coaching and barbershop music as we can absorb. Thank you to every one of you for sending good wishes and encouragement, oh yes and funding!

2009 Region #34 Quartet Champions

What a fantastic time we had in Hobart! BlackJaQ are over the moon about achieving a personal best and equaling the Region’s best score to date of 599 points to win this year’s regional competition.   BlackJaQ have worked very hard this past year with great coaches and are thrilled that the ‘tools’ we have in our toolbox are becoming more reliant (when those nerves kick in!) and more in number. Thank you to all of those who have worked with us this past 12 – 18 months and we look forward to continuing to work on our skills and learn more in the next year.

BlackJaQ have made the decision to compete in Nashville and are now in the process of organising flights and setting up fundraising opportunities. We have many things planned with the help of lots of our beautiful PHC friends and will be releasing our second CD in August. If you would like to support BlackJaQ in our journey to International to represent Australia by purchasing a CD, please send an email to Helen Bolton to place an order.

Alliance - Road to Anaheim

What a great show! Alliance (Ian, Adrian, Danny and Richard) excelled themselves staging a variety show all their own. They sang quality barbershop, a little country and some great pop hits.

We were so pleased to be a part of the line up. It was the first showing of our latest performance costume (thanks Linda) and a chance to run our competition set. We also sang Don't Tell Me... Frog Kissin (a fun song) and It Was Almost Like a Song. Even the dialogue flowed well :-)

We joined Alliance in the finale of the show to sing  a double quartet ballad called  ‘And So To Sleep’. Ahh… the sound made you tingle.

xx

'just a quick message to congratulate you all on your fabulous performance at the show. You sang beautifully and looked wonderful.' J.D.
